Introducing Calligraphy, Sephone’s paperless call messaging service

At Sephone we have a unique relationship with the small and medium-sized businesses we help in Maine and throughout the country. As we build tools for these companies, we’re able to see how they work. We learn about what’s important to keep their organizations running smoothly. We hear about frustrations and parts of business that aren’t ideal. And we experience them in our own business, too.

Phone messaging seems to be one of the parts of business that’s tough for a lot of companies. It’s difficult to handle and track calls while at the same time keeping a personal voice on the other end of the line.

Even though we’re launching Calligraphy to the world today, we’ve actually been testing it – in one form or another – for almost six years. Calligraphy is a complete rewrite of an internal system we’ve used to track the phone calls we receive at Sephone since a few months after I joined the team back in 2005. Since the partners were on the road for meetings or visits as often as they were in the office, we had piles of sticky notes that built up until they came back to our home base. We built a simple app that would notify them about new calls instantly with an email and a message on their cell phone. It’s saved us a bunch of time and sticky notes; we’ve recorded over 3,000 calls in the last year alone.
