A few weeks ago when I went to my gym and I checked in to foursquare on my phone. It was 5:30am and I wanted to get credit for my good behavior! I have never been a big user of Foursquare, thought it was pretty juvenile and didn’t see why people wanted other people to know there whereabouts. Then I had a fleeting thought. “What about my customers or potential clients? What are they thinking and using?”
Isn’t this the most important thing? As I was checking in, I realized that my gym was participating in a “giveaway.” You show them your phone and you get a free water. Now a free water may not be the most exciting thing, but when you are all sweaty at the gym cold, clean water that’s FREE, I am excited! As I was looking through some of the comments on foursquare about my gym, I was pretty surprised that many people were unsatisfied, felt the atmosphere wasn’t friendly, I could only wonder – is anyone LISTENING or READING these comments from the gym management to try and make happy customers out of unhappy ones?
About a year and a half ago, we wrote a post about profiles and how a business should try and create and manage their online presence through free tools on line. We also wrote about we use these tools on our phones all the time. Most of the apps are free to use either from the listing side or from the user side.
Whether you are listing your own businesses or creating a promotion for those clients that use them, you need to be making sure you also use the power in these tools to reach out to those that REVIEW (Yelp) or GIVE A TIP (foursquare) to others. Bad comments stick and there is an expectation from those that post that someone cares about what they say. Even if you feel these applications are silly, if your customers don’t, then think again!
