As everyone knows- When you set your clocks back is when you are supposed to check the batteries in your smoke detectors.  This is to make sure that periodically homeowners pay attention to the little detail of fresh batteries to ensure that when you NEED the smoke detector to work- it will.

Every spring I would like to propose that in addition to changing the batteries in your smoke detectors- to also take the time to check your online assets.  Specifically your revenue generating assets.  For those that have them, that is!

If you still aren’t following, here we go-Payment_Gateway_Integration

If you have an e-commerce website- a site that collects or processes payment information for your business, then this tip is for you.

This applies for sites, services, apps, or portals where you have your banking info recorded, or collect payment info for products or services you offer your customers.  Payment gateways like PowerPay, Authorize.Net, PayPal, TransFirst….. yadda yadda- there are many!

At a minimum we suggest that you:

  1. Change your Passwords to the login areas just because you cannot be too careful
  2. Verify that you are accepting the credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, Amex, etc) that you wish to accept
  3. Review your processor settings for AVS (Address Verification).  AVS is a Visa service to combat fraudulent activity for non-face-to-face transactions by cross-referencing the cardholder’s address information with the card issuer’s records.Because AVS only verifies the numeric portion of the address, certain anomalies like apartment numbers can cause false declines; however, it is reported to be a rare occurrence.AVS verifies the numeric portions of a cardholder’s billing address. For example, if the address is 101 Main Street, Highland, CA 92346, in the United States, AVS will check 101 and 92346. Sometimes AVS checks additional digits such as an apartment number, other times it does not. Cardholders may receive false negatives, or partial declines for AVS from e-commerce verification systems, which may require manual overrides, voice authorization, or reprogramming of the AVS entries by the card issuing bank. For more info on AVS, check with your specific Payment service provider or visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Address_Verification_System

Just by performing these 3 simple and painless checks you will:

  • Be more secure
  • Provide a better service to your customers
  • Reduce potential fraudulent transactions of your products and services

That way, the revenue you earn, is money to buy some bling! Or re-invest in your business, hire more staff or enhance your website.  But that is another blog post.

Happy Spring!

Different Strokes for Different Folks….

“What you talkin’ about Willis!”

Guess I just dated myself with a reference to Gary Coleman (who) and the eighties.  Anyway.  The point is, all people are not served equally by technology and all technology is for all people.  In this case Apps.  Unless you are using a smart phone, or other mobile device such as an iPad or other tablet (Samsung Galaxy, etc) you may not know what apps are.

Now, all you other geeks and gear heads, dont start criticizing me cuz I left out computers…  Yes apps are now available for laptops and desktops too through google apps and apple apps stores ( and there are others too).  But this post is about apps for mobile devices-  more to follow.

‘Apps’ for those who dont know are ‘Applications’ – programs for the mobile platform.  Some are games, some are productivity tools, other are for reference & there are many other purposes.  I encourage you to seek out the app store for your device, whether its an Apple iOS device or an Android based device.

For me, games are a nice distraction or reprieve from writing specs or proposals.  Strike Knight, Angry Birds are a few of my current favorites.  Amazon Kindle has proven to be more than I would have given credit as I never thought I’d give up hard bound books or even the paperback.  But I do admit, it is quite handy.

But- today-  I think my App of the week has to be ‘Pages’.   Yeah-  not very sexy or fun.

Pages is the Mac ‘equivolent’ of an MS Word program.  But, better.

I do all of my document creation using Pages and it has become probably my most used program on my notebook.  Now that I am the proud owner of an iPad and I am attempting to be even more mobile, I am trying to see how far away from my notebook I can get with the iPad.

That sounds funny- doesnt it.  We used to want to get away from our desktops using a laptop, then notebook, now that has become too clunky to lug around.

Being that I am an admitted paper pusher- in order for the iPad to replace my MacBook Pro- I need to be able to write my docs and the Pages app for the iPad hits the mark.

It handles text, images and layout very well and even editing on my iPad isnt sooo bad.  (no bluetooth keyboard…. yet)

As an added benefit, syncing with iDisk I can access documents that I am currently working on on my notebook or my iPad; what ever is my fancy.  So truth be told  App of the Week for me is Pages for iPad and iDisk.

What is your favorite App of the week?

Despite the fact that I am ‘in the Biz’, I have integrated social media into my daily life.  Both professionally, being part of Sephone Interactive Media, and also personally.  Specifically, I am mainly referencing facebook at the moment.

this is facebook

some common social media services

Now, the first image that comes to my mind is that commercial of a guy tweeting about just sitting on his patio.  THAT IS NOT ME! Although I have DM’d (Direct Messaged) my son to come down to dinner a few times.

Being the parent of two active kids, my free time is usually spent driving, chaperoning, organizing, attending, watching, buying or something related to their activities.  (no I don’t usually get to do anything I want to do any more- just sometimes ;-) )

Whether its hockey, figure skating, gymnastics, music, school related or hobby related, there is probably a website and facebook page that goes along.

These pages are extremely helpful in keeping tabs on updates, practice schedules, game schedules, or other important parent stuff so ‘we ‘ don’t forget or miss anything.  They are also ways to appropriately share pictures or videos with other ‘rents and families too.  That is stuff for another blog post.

In addition to the pages I have identified as being ‘likable’, I have also volunteered to manage a few to make my life easier as well as to help others stay in-touch.

Parents need to look out for each other, because we can’t always be at every hockey game, PTO meeting, gymnastics event, music showcase, or skating lesson, can we?

You get to know some of the other families across your kids social calendars, and we know we aren’t alone-  Families with 3 or 4+ kids have even a tougher time-  There are only so many places you can be at one time-  I haven’t invented cloning for parents yet, have you?  Therefore, If Mom takes Sissy and Dad takes Junior, who takes Billy to his event?   Chances are, another teammates parent.  So how do you keep up or stay in touch?  It is nice when  that parent is on top of things and posts the score or pics so you know how Billy’s day is progressing and you can be happy for them, its almost like being there! (almost)

Facebook isn’t for everyone.  I know at least one person in my house doesn’t have any desire to join the rest of the online community.

Hint: my fourteen year old has been online for 2 years and my 7 year old is begging for an account…

Some see it as a chore or giving up your privacy-  But, you should only share what you want and NO ONE wants to read a play-by-play of your entire day- so keep things within reason and you will be fine.  I see it as a venue to also scratch my itch to be a writer.  They say there is a novel in each of us.

Who knows- you may end up writing that new bestseller or volunteering to start the page for the PTO next month.

A while back we announced some changes that were happening at Sephone.  Changes that were bold.  Changes that were/are to improve our work flow, customer experiences and overall to make us a better company. Here is that post.

While implementing these changes, we introduced some new tools and prettied up some existing tools; all with the same goal.

Many of these tools were introduced in early 2010 & more in October 2010

SUPPORT is our primary support ticket mechanism.  Whether our clients generate the ticket from the website, or we generate it for clients call or send us an email.

Some of the benefits of this system are: It creates and audit trail for us, and it replies back to the client in an email for all status updates that are performed on the ticket and will eventually be a link from the clients “my.Sephone.com” dashboard that acts as a knowledge base for our clients and our staff.

Support Tickets can range from problems to suggestions.  And in either instance, they are recorded and processed in the order they are received and based on the information that is provided in the ticket.

The ticket submission options are:

  1. Just a Suggestion
  2. Could you take a look at this sometime?
  3. This has been bugging me and I’d like it done
  4. I need this done fairly quickly
  5. I cannot do ANYTHING until this is done

When we receive the ticket, during standard business hours (M-F, 8-5)

If options 1 ,2 or 3 are chosen; we would see the ticket and it is addressed as soon as possible and responded to no later than the end of the next business day.

If options 4 or 5 are chosen (M-F 8-5) we also see the ticket and if there was anything that could be done to resolve the issue, it would be.

After hours support is reserved for extreme instances for example if servers are unresponsive or mission critical web apps are not operating.

In each of the  5 options, the customer is sent a confirmation e-mail re-stating the ticket; and as the ticket is updated,  all updates sent via email.  With their my.Sephone.com account, customers can log in to their account and review ANY and ALL support tickets, and their resolutions for their reference.

A web technician will review the ticket info and respond according to the details provided.  If the ticket will be resolved by the next business day, a response will be generated through the ticketing system, so filling out the form with a real email address is required.

Note: This post isn’t to inform you of changes to the levels of support we offer, since we haven’t changed them; but we have changed the mechanisms in which our clients can reach us and improved the ways we are able to respond.

Recommendation -

If you are entering in to a busy period, give your site a walk-through, so if you do see something that requires attention, yours or ours, there is ample time before the rush starts.

Thank you for your help in being efficient and productive in solving your issues and questions by making use of tools like  (my.Sephone.com,  support.Sephone.com and status.Sephone.com) to identify if it is a known issue, or if it needs to be reported.

As more information regarding our my.Sephone.com account manager is made available to our clients- we will notify you via the blog, email and other notifications.  In the mean time- you can contact us to obtain access to your account to get a sneak peak.

We can never say enough, “Thank You”  for your business and allowing us to be your trusted partner navigating the web.
We are looking forward to a Happy New Year for All!

This year instead of driving or flying or cruising to a ‘far-away’ destination for the DiStefano family vacation, we invited my brother and his family from NJ to come up to Maine.  Now that isn’t any thing new, as they have come up before and we went to our camp on Cold Stream Pond- but that isn’t a vacation, that is a normal weekend in the Summer for us-

So this year we made reservations in Old Orchard Beach.  OOB for native Maine-ahs.

OOB is the quintessential New England beach community complete with a Pier, Amusement Park and all the rest that goes with what you have in your mind of a summer beach community.

We have been to OOB a few times over the last 3 years.  But never for more that a weekend or so.  But when we began our planning for the 2010 Family Vaca, we had just been there and had a great time.  The year before we were there around the same time when the biggest Storm of the season was coming-  waves were breaking so close to the shore that the water was almost up to the floorboards on the Pier.
For those that know, the Pier at OOB is about 20 feet above the water at high tide!

Anyway- OOB it was.

Searching for a place to stay wasn’t too difficult-  being in the web business we have several client sites, (did you think I’d write this without a shameless plug for our valuable clients?, really!) like the Maine Tourism Association (http://www.mainetourism.com) and our own Maine Events (http://www.maineevents.com).   After searching and viewing the lodging section and reading about the accommodations we selected the Waves Oceanfront right on the beach.  Adjoining rooms so the kiddies could visit non-stop and so that my bro and I could enjoy a brew and cigar on the patio at night.   It was a very pleasant week.  Oh, did I mention that the Waves were part of the Lafayette chain (another shameless plug!)  But I did not know that at the time and was pleasantly surprised upon check-in that this was a recent acquisition along with the SeaView just up the block.  Danny-  nice place, cant wait to see what you do with the new properties-  Next year we may take the ‘Governors’ “mansion” and have the entire DiStefano clan drive up!

Between all of the different places to eat, we really enjoyed Jimmy the Greeks on Route 5- Nice selection of beers from around the world, brick oven pizza and a fantastic spread of Greek food I haven’t been exposed to in a long time.  Uppa!  My 7 year old had her fill of spanakopita (SPINACH!) and I had a Gyro-  YUM.  But wait, there is more!

Breakfast at the Beach Street Cafe was interesting-  the owners(?), very attractive eastern European women, were very friendly  who know how to make breakfast AND by noon are closed and on the beach(we think)!  Tom’s breakfast shack was also an experience (BINGO!)-  we at there al fresco and enjoyed it as well as Joseph’s By the Sea!  Very nice.

Ok-  you think all I did was eat breakfast and drink beer and smoke cigars all week, right?  Nope-  we went to the beach of

course, Fun Town Splash Town USA, too (there were 3 kids 7,9,14); walked up and down Grand Avenue (a lot) and went for assorted drives to get ice cream, dinner and a trip to Portland for lunch at DiMillo’s.  And on Thursday night there were Fireworks on the beach with the amusement park all lit up -  very picturesque and fun.

There was more to do than we had time for, although my brother and I did steal away to Westbrook to visit the Victory dealer-  unfortunately- by the time we got there it was a little late for a test drive on a new 2011 Vegas.  A boy and his toys!

The weather was perfect, even though we got a bit of a scare from Todd, Jarrod and Co -  (WABI-TV) The rain we heard was coming our way only arrived for the drive down from Veazie, and disappeared in the afternoon on Monday-  Even WeatherBug had it wrong the whole way down.  Thank you Mother Nature for changing your mind!

Now with any family vacation, there were ‘those times’ too, where one kid was making too much noise for the other, or someone was being a nudge to a sibling, you know, that’s what being a family is all about.  But all in all we had a great time, and we were sad to see it go by way too fast.

Cant wait to plan for next summer-  Maybe the Seaview, maybe the Governors mansion.

But Maine for sure (pronounced “Shore”)!  And we are back just in time for the American Folk Festival on the Bangor Waterfront! and some  Waterfront Concerts to see Tim McGraw and Jason Mraz.

What a summer!

disclaimer:

If any of my comments are incorrect, or mis-leading- I am sorry- All comments are mine (Joe DiStefano) and I thoroughly enjoyed our time in OOB.   All comments were meant in the most positive way and no disrespect was intended!

Sephone has been developing and supporting Real Estate sites for many years.  Most recently- our clients have been using our product called RE/SourceMLS.  As a vendor to MREIS (Maine Real Estate Information Services) we receive hourly updates to MLS data that is reflected on our clients websites who use this service. (Note: they need to be registered with MREIS too!)

Recently, MREIS has made some changes to their offerings, like more images per listing and a few other perks-  Well, RE/SourceMLS has some too-

This service is available now to sponsoring clients!

Coming Soon to RE/SourceMLS
Reflecting the only non-MREIS map search web-based MLS listings engine around, RE/SourceMLS now supports the ability to override map coordinates.  Available in July 2010 ALL RE/SourceMLS subscribers will be able to override push-pin coordinates to make viewers aware of properties as they are closer to water frontage, roads or other notable areas.

For more info on this product, visit the website !

Can you believe this!?

This is the same as our friend from Nigeria who is looking for a trusting soul to move his uncles money-  Only this time it is a “a supposed Captain” in the United States Marine Corp.

For those who are already savvy- please excuse me as it is my obligation to inform the others…

DO NOT BELIEVE “capt.” Collin Lachappelle!  THIS IS NOT REAL, NEVER WAS REAL and WILL NEVER BE REAL!

I am Captain. Matthew Stamford with the United States Marine Corps (USMC). Hard to believe but, I have $900,000.00, found at the start of Operation Khanjari on July 4 2009, in Poshteh Afghanistan. I need to move this money out to a safer place. Can I trust you to receive it on mybehalf upon its evacuation from Kabul? Contact me on matstamford@admin.in.th

Thanks, I needed to do that-

It is a repeating effort that these low-life’s are using-
hoping that an unsuspecting individual, usually a senior citizen who is unlucky to receive this notice and thinks they are helping- will respond.

My first thought is, “Why did it take so long to retire that guy, the former Prime Minister, Prince, Son of the Prime Minister, Nephew to the Sultan? ”

The fact that they have moved on to US “soil” is disturbing, can they really believe that Americans are that gullable?
Again, unfortunately there are some that are, especially since it relates to patriotism and $900,000.00
So-

Pass this along, share it with your web-connected family and friends. If they want to help someone, donate to the USO, find their local Troop Greeters organization, or send $10 to Haiti;

Karma will know.

Wake up Mr. Bin Laden, Mr. Ahmadinejad and others (you know who you are)

Rodney King had it right when he asked “Can’t we all just get along”? Captain Kirk and crew had it right too in the 25th Century.

While reading the blog of Kelly’s (LadyOTrout) hero Chris Brogan- I saw this little diddy.  I thought I would share it with you all too-  Thanks Chris.

CB “I got this via Maura’s site after she complimented my recent Twitter avatar.

What’s this have to do with anything? Nothing. Except, maybe, if you think about it: Twitter is a serendipity engine for the web, and maybe there’s a story in understanding that power. There might not always be profit, at least not in the business sense, but maybe there’s a lot more wealth in these hidden kingdoms than what you’re thinking about right away.

Just a thought.”

It isnt magical, or spiritual, I didnt understand one single word of it (since it was in Korean?) but it shows what we as a people across the world can do if we tried.  In this case it is kinda silly; but sillier things need to happen to make us forget our differences and see what is common between us-

I thought it was cute and if 100 people can take time out of their days to follow some web-based choriography to put a smile on my face, well they deserve my thanks and attention.

Why did I bring attention to the axis of evil-doers? well- 1.)  to catch your attention, and b.) to maybe catch theirs.  ;-)

We can all learn from this-  the Joe’s, the Scott’s, the Kelly’s; but also the Obama’s the George’s,  & the Kim’s, the Gordon’s & the Angela’s too!
