Unicode Domain Names

April 24, 2017

Recently there has been a resurgence of “phishing” websites which have one goal in mind: to get your personal information. Keeping an eye on the domain name of the website that you are visiting is always important, but recently it has become quite an issue for major companies that you wouldn’t often think twice about trusting.

WordPress Plug-Ins: Our Toolbelt (Updated)

April 14, 2017

WordPress is one of those omnipresent forces around the internet – and with so many plug-ins and themes, it’s easy to understand why. According to the CodeInWP blog, there are about 15,886,000 sites running the Content Management System (CMS). If you were to try and visit each of those websites, spending exactly 1 minutes at each, it would take over three decades to finish browsing.

WHOIS, ICANN: Should I be Worried?

December 29, 2016

Each year, domain name registrars send out an email asking about your WHOIS information. This is because a lot can happen in a year, especially when you own or operate a business. Maybe your business moved locations, or your phone number changed. Maybe a lot more significant changes took place. Your registrar cares about information that is relevant to your business and your website.

Online Security

December 9, 2016

With the holidays upon us and the increase in online sales, I wanted to take a few minutes to talk about online security.  Many online retailers take your security very seriously, but as we know, websites still get compromised every day (even sites as large as Yahoo & LinkedIn can be victimized).

So what are some things that you can do to keep your accounts and personal information secure online during this holiday shopping season and throughout the year?

3 Changes in 12 Years

November 4, 2016

During my last semester as a college student in 2005, I sat down with the partners and developers at Sephone to talk about the kind of work we wanted to do. We talked about giving people control of their own websites – a pretty novel concept back then, when WordPress wasn’t yet a common name in the business world and the only real option for digital communication was an email or instant message.

Over the past twelve years, we at Sephone, have built three versions of our own content management systems, a new e-commerce engine, secure file sharing and storage platforms, a nationwide event directory, and countless custom applications for businesses of all kinds. A lot has changed since those first days of 2005, but three main threads stand out as the biggest shifts in how we use our digital tools.

Beauty is only “Skin” Deep

October 21, 2016

This Goes For Websites too!

Brady’s last post about eCommerce websites and the holidays approaching, inspired me to write this post:

Business owners want their company website to look beautiful, maybe have a lot of “glitz” and functionality.  But Google isn’t always that impressed.

Each year, Google changes up their algorithm 500-600 times.  Some changes are small and others aren’t so small. Some have big consequences.  Business owners are running their businesses and don’t always notice, they may see their website as a beautiful, shiny thing. They love it, it is like a child. read more
